Transmission Problem

Hi, I'm the second owner of a 1996 Rialta. We have the papers showing the first owner had the transmission worked on in 1998 and March 2000, (about 2 months before trading it in on a 2000 Rialta). We have put about 8000 miles on it since we bought it ( 57,000 miles total on it) and now the transmission is slipping in 2nd and 3rd gear. Good news is we live only 5 miles from a VW dealer who is a authorized to work on the Rialta. Bad news they say it is a internal failure that will need the whole transmission replaced for $6200! (Which in itself sounds fishy). I have called the local transmission shops and I don't get a warm fuzzy when talking to them. Most have never heard of a Rialta and never have worked on this type of transmission. Being in aircraft maintenance, I feel I could replace the transmission myself if I could find one. To add stress to the situation, I am in the Air Force and just received orders to Turkey. So now I need to fix this problem and sell it buy June! If anyone knows of where I could find a used or rebuilt AG-4 automatic transmission, or would like to take over payments, ($31,000 ish) please drop me a line.
