Rear Suspension

We just completed an excellent trip to California and back from Pittsburgh, PA in our 1995 Rialta. The 5-cyclinder engine ran great. However, one problem we noticed is that the rear of the unit (near what may be the wheel wells) "bangs" loudly when the unit runs over bumps in the road. On smoother roads, the unit runs very nicely and is fairly quiet. I had the shocks checked by a mechanic (but not a qualified VW mechanic since I cannot find one). I also changed the air pressure in the air shocks to various different levels but it did not seem to make a significant difference. I would definitely like to know what is causing the "banging" as someething definitely is not right. And, I would like to find a qualified VW service center in the Pittsburgh, PA who can work on a Rialta. Any help on these issues would be most appreciated.
