Follow-Up:

Phil, I can somewhat confirm your experience. I had about 40k miles on my 2000 Rialta just prior to selling it this last Spring. I cannot advise people to NOT buy a Rialta, but I can say to anyone considering a Rialta that you should not let the much touted "you can use it as a second family vehicle" be a main reason for choosing the Rialta over any other small motorhome. I don't feel there is a motorhome made for heavy yearly mileage or daily useage. They just aren't cars. They seem to be made for long but infrequent trips, and anything else results in significantly more mechanical problems. Thankfully, the only problems I had was a throttle body replacement (unfortunately out of warranty) and a persistent but slight leak in the transmission pan seam that VW couldn't fix even after 4 attempts. I also had numerous problems with the dash AC compressor, but that was fixed under warranty. The rest of my problems were on the Winnebago side, but not too much was significant (other than early tire failure under warranty) -- mainly just annoying. I think that a lot of the problems I had with the Winnebago side was again because I used this a daily school runner for the kids, and it just doesn't seem to be able to handle that type of use (even if it's not really abuse). To JT, if you're looking for a code reader, I suggest getting a VAG-COM from www.Ross-Tech.com. It is specifically designed as an alternative to the official VW code reader, and some VW shops even use it. You have to have a computer (laptop or desktop) to use it though, as it is only an interface cable and software. Cost is $200, but you should also factor in the Bentley shop manuals for the Eurovan either on CD ($80) or very heavy two volume paperback ($160). Without the Bentleys, you'll have a hard time figure out the errors you find with the VAG-COM. The problems you're describing seem like they would trip a dummy light or two on the dash. Is your check engine light or anything else on when you encounter this problem? -- Chris
